A personalised book about the jungle

The jungle is bursting with life on every level, from the ants on the ground to the monkeys in the treetops. It's green, warm and noisy, and for a child who loves animals there's something new behind every leaf. A book about the jungle lets your child push through the undergrowth, sleep in a hammock and meet animals they may only have seen in pictures. There's something wild and free about it: you climb, swing and splash. And in the jungle you also learn to be careful around things you don't know.

In a jungle book your child can search the foliage for a missing frog, help a toucan find its way back to its nest or build a raft to cross the river before the rain comes. Perhaps a troop of monkeys has made off with the expedition's packed lunch, or there's a path that only the smallest animals know about. The jungle offers plenty of movement: climbing, jumping, hiding, splashing. Another adventure could be following a trail of ants all the way to a hidden ruin, or helping a jaguar cub that has ended up on the wrong side of a waterfall.

If your child has a favourite animal from the zoo, a pair of binoculars they love carrying about or a cuddly monkey that goes everywhere with them, it can have a place in the book. Write in whether your child loves climbing trees or would rather build dens, and the adventure can build on that. A parent who always packs too much can be the one carrying the expedition's enormous rucksack. If your child is scared of something in nature, such as spiders or loud noises, the book can let them meet it in a gentle dose.

For the very youngest, animal sounds and bold colours are enough: a green snake, a red parrot, a splash. Pre-schoolers want to meet the animals one at a time and learn their names. School-age children love a mission with maps and tracks, and ten-year-olds can manage a longer expedition where the weather and the terrain make things difficult.

The sloth moves so slowly that algae can grow in its fur, which is why it sometimes looks a bit green. That helps it blend in among the leaves. Rainforest grows where it is warm and rains a lot all year round. Try copying more animals too: the parrot, the monkey, the snake.
