Why the theme Fairies makes a good book

An adventure that suits the child

Fairies are tiny, and that is a big part of their charm. A child who is often the smallest person in the room suddenly gets to see a world where a dewdrop is a mirror and a dandelion is a tree. Here the child is the big one, and gets to decide whether to shrink down and join in. Fairies can be playful and a little mischievous, but in the book they become friends who need help. The result is a story full of light, flowers and tiny treasures, and plenty to hunt for in the garden afterwards.

A kingdom in the grass

In a book about fairies, your child can shrink to the size of a thumb and ride on a bumblebee, go to a ball under a toadstool or help the fairies wake the first flowers of spring. Perhaps a young fairy has hurt her wing by a stream, and it is your child who knows how to build a raft from a leaf. Small things become big, and everyday objects like a button or a bead turn into treasure. Wings come in every colour, and anyone can be a fairy. Your child can learn to fly as well: a few flaps over a puddle at first, then high above the garden fence.

Give the fairies something from home

Fairies are said to love small, shiny things, and that is worth using. Tell us about your child's own collection – shells, marbles, a sparkly hair clip – or the flower bed where you plant sunflowers together. A cat that likes to lie in the sun can become the fairies' great, soft giant. Brothers and sisters can have wings of their own, and a grandma who sews might be the one who made the gown the fairy queen needs. If your child has a favourite flower, the fairies can live in exactly that one.

A very young reader gets short lines about flying, landing and sleeping inside a flower. Older pre-schoolers enjoy following a simple mission across the meadow. From six upwards there can be a fairy who tells the odd fib, or a spell that has to be broken with a clever trick, and for the oldest the story can be about what it costs to leave fairyland behind.

Mist over the meadow

In old British and Irish folklore, fairies dance across the fields when mist lies low on a summer evening, and leave rings in the grass where they have been. Go out on an evening like that and look – the mist is real, and it is easy to see why people long ago thought they saw figures dancing in it. You can also build a fairy house from twigs, moss and pine cones under a bush and check whether anything has moved by the next morning. Afterwards, talk about big and small: what would a kitchen look like for someone no taller than a matchstick?

Your child is the hero

You fill in the child's name, age and what they like, and upload a photo. The story about fairies is written for your very own child, and the thirteen pictures and the cover are drawn from the photo in the style you choose. Brothers and sisters, parents, grandparents or the pet can come along, up to five characters. If you would like to include something that has happened lately, a trip or a lost tooth, just write it and it is woven in.
