Why the theme Giants makes a good book

An adventure that suits the child

Children live among giants every day. The table is high, grown-ups can reach the top shelf and door handles are a long way up. A story about giants turns all that upside down: now the child is the small, quick one, and the big one turns out to be clumsy, lonely or scared of something tiny. It is funny and reassuring at the same time to see that size is not everything. Your child gets to be the one who can squeeze in where the giant cannot reach, and the one who understands what the giant really needs.

Big and small on the same page

Much of the fun in a giant story comes from the difference in size. Your child can walk through the giant's pocket as if it were a cave, sleep in his slipper or help him thread a needle he cannot see. Perhaps the giant has lost his ring, a seed he promised to plant or the mouse who is his only friend. Your child finds it, and the giant carries them home on his shoulder, high above the forest. Another way in is a giant who is frightened of mice, or one who longs to make friends with the village but has no idea how to knock without breaking the door.

The giant steps into your everyday life

The giant is more fun when he lands in your child's own world. Tell us where you live – by the sea, in a block of flats, out in the countryside – and the giant can step over your very own roof. Mention your child's favourite game, and perhaps the giant wants to play too, even though he will never fit in the sandpit. A brother or sister can be the first to hear the footsteps, and a tall parent might even be called a giant by the giant himself.

For a child under three it is mostly about big and little, boom and hush. Pre-schoolers love a giant who looks frightening but turns out to be kind. From around six, the giant can have a problem that takes cunning and teamwork to solve, and older children can be given a story where it is not clear whether every giant can be trusted.

The stones the giants threw

Here and there in the countryside of Britain, Ireland and much of northern Europe, enormous boulders sit all alone in the middle of a field or a wood. Long ago people said giants had hurled them there. The real answer is almost as grand: during the Ice Age, glaciers carried the rocks along and left them behind when the ice melted. They are called erratics. Find one near you, stand beside it and wonder how big a giant would need to be to throw it. Some erratics are bigger than a house. And ask your child what a giant would have for breakfast.

Your child is the hero

You fill in the child's name, age and what they like, and upload a photo. The story about giants is written for your very own child, and the thirteen pictures and the cover are drawn from the photo in the style you choose. Brothers and sisters, parents, grandparents or the pet can come along, up to five characters. If you would like to include something that has happened lately, a trip or a lost tooth, just write it and it is woven in.
